Why Christ Came: for judgement
Jesus came for judgement.
Why did Jesus come?
Jesus came to demonstrate and convince us of our inability to abide under the law and follow it as required. He came to show us how inadequate we are to live as we are called to, pleasing to God. In John 9:39 Jesus says, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” This judgement that Jesus brought reveals that we are in a deep and dark pit. But he does not leave us in that mucky, dark pit where we find ourselves. That is the difference our Jesus makes. This verse is found within the story of the blind man healed at the pool of Siloam on the Sabbath; he is then questioned by the pharisees who send him away. When Jesus finds the man again, his spiritual eyes are then opened, and he becomes a Jesus-worshiper. Yes, he came for judgement, but his ultimate goal was that our eyes be opened, we repent and be made righteous. He came to shine a light into our pit and help us out of it. He came to shine a light on our wrongs that we may choose to right them, to right our lives, to live right with him. We may be uncomfortable thinking that Jesus came for judgment, because we know the final judgement is yet to come. But it is the conviction of the Holy Spirit that continues to carry out this role in our lives. It is this kind of conviction with the purpose of directing us toward change that Jesus came to lay the groundwork for. He came that we might take the opportunity to respond and therefore alter the final judgement when we choose Him as lord and master.
