Session 6: Luke Chapters 11-12 Teachings and Warnings (Part 2)
Session 6: Luke Chapters 11-12 Teachings and Warnings
This 12-session study looks at the heart of Jesus for all people, as seen in the book of Luke. It is in Luke’s gospel that we see the breadth of Jesus’ ministry to reach all people, to bring all into his arms and show them his heart for them personally. Since Christ and the Father are one (John 10:30), Luke provides the opportunity to see for ourselves how God interacts with his beloved, how he showers his beloved with goodness and mercy all of our days (Ps 23:6). And the good news is that you are his beloved! He delights in you (Zeph 3:17)!
This post is the second part of session six of the study, with each session opening with warm-up introductory questions, going on to a reading from Luke and questions related to the passage. Then the study goes to the comparative or referenced Old Testament passages found in the assigned reading with accompanying questions. Each study session ends with considerations for personal application. The study is appropriate for individual or small group application. Feel free to share the response to an application question or just comment on the study itself below.
Old Testament Links
Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, as recounted in Jonah 1:17 and Luke 11:30. Read Jonah 1:2 and 3:1-10 to formulate a picture of what Jonah’s mission was to Nineveh and the Ninevites’ response. Note the similarities of Jonah’s story to Jesus’ life as well as the differences.
How are Jonah 4:10-11 related to Luke 12:22-31?
In Leviticus 27:30-31, Moses describes the tithe as requested by God. How did the Pharisees follow the law?
Consider Deuteronomy 10:12-22 and Micah 6:8. How did the Pharisees follow this part of the law? Use these verses to assist in defining ‘love of God’ from Luke 11:42.
Compare the Parable of the Rich Fool (12:16-21) to the teachings of Proverbs 11:22-28. What warnings can be taken from the two readings?
The imagery of Luke 12:35 is also found in Exodus 12:11. How might this image impress urgency on watchfulness?
Application
How does Jesus embody the principles of the law that the Pharisees struggled to reconcile? Consider either the 10 Commandments found in Deuteronomy 5:6-21 or the law as presented previously in Leviticus 27:30-31 and Deuteronomy 10:12-22.
What does watchfulness look like for you, in your everyday? How might your watchfulness differ from a teacher, a janitor, or a lawyer?
Consider practicing audacious prayer by writing it out and sharing with each other (if in group).
