Session 2: Luke Chapters 3-4 Beginning a Ministry

Share a bit of your personal genealogy. How important are your ancestors to you?

These two chapters describe the mission of John and Jesus and how they went about starting their ministries. Both of them begin in the wilderness and are drawn into the crowds. Both are drawn to the Jordan in their urge to others to follow God’s word.

We would agree that Jesus and his ministry is the most important thing in our lives, and perhaps in all of history. He is the one who links us together in this study and is the common point for us. Do you think it is his humanity, the genealogy, or his divinity that links us most?

Questions

What is the difference between John’s baptism and Jesus’ baptism?

Which groups of people came to John in repentance? Which asked how they could live out their repentance? Why would some groups not ask such of John?

What were John’s lessons to the people to produce fruit of repentance? Describe any theme or general idea that runs through the teachings.

At baptism of Jesus, how are all three of the Trinity present at the baptism of Jesus?

Where does the ancestry of Jesus end? What does this say of Jesus?

Jesus was led to the wilderness by the Spirit where he was tempted by Satan. How does Jesus respond to the temptation?

Jesus declares his mission when he reads in the synagogue. Then he tells of those who the prophets of the Old Testament did the same for; who are they specifically? How do these two figures help define the people, or ‘the poor’, Jesus came to serve?  

What are the similarities in chapter 4, verses 16, 31, and 44? How does this relate to the mission that Jesus read aloud in verses 18-19?
