Session 10: Luke Chapters 19-20 Jesus as King Part 1

Session 10: Luke Chapters 19-20 Jesus as King

This 12-session study looks at the heart of Jesus for all people, as seen in the book of Luke. It is in Luke’s gospel that we see the breadth of Jesus’ ministry to reach all people, to bring all into his arms and show them his heart for them personally. Since Christ and the Father are one (John 10:30), Luke provides the opportunity to see for ourselves how God interacts with his beloved, how he showers his beloved with goodness and mercy all of our days (Ps 23:6). And the good news is that you are his beloved! He delights in you (Zeph 3:17)!

This post is the first part of session ten of the study, with each session opening with warm-up introductory questions, going on to a reading from Luke and questions related to the passage. Then the study goes to the comparative or referenced Old Testament passages found in the assigned reading with accompanying questions. Each study session ends with considerations for personal application. The study is appropriate for individual or small group application. Feel free to share the response to an application question or just comment on the study itself below.

Introduction

What has changed in you, in your character and actions, since knowing Jesus? Describe the before and after.

Is it acceptable to ask God questions? Will he always answer?

These chapters open the week of the crucifixion, the week of Jewish Passover. As Jesus’ time on earth drew near to the end, we see how our King Jesus ruled and how his people are important to him. We have the account of Zacchaeus and his change of heart, parables of the kingdom and its people and demonstrations of Jesus’ competence in handling sticky situations. These chapters make it clear that Jesus is worthy of our trust.

In Chapter 20, Jesus is asked three questions:

The first question is on his authority. Why didn’t Jesus directly answer the question? How does the Parable in verses 9-19 answer their question?

The second question is about integrity. In the answer, Jesus says that the image of Caesar is on the coin, so return it to him. What is God’s image found on? How can it be given back to God?

The final question relates to doctrine. What was Jesus’ answer?

How do the answers to these questions show that God handles complicated well?
