Names of Jesus Advent Readings
I’ve mentioned that the Christmas season where I live starts on September 1, but it admittedly doesn’t have much to do with Christ. The decorations are nice and it certainly adds to the excitement, but it can also start to get old before December is even here. So, I find it quite a joy to focus on the ‘reason for the season’ once we get to advent.
Advent is typically celebrated by liturgical churches around the world to prepare for the coming of Christ. Some might differ on whether we celebrate the first or the second coming of Christ, but generally not that it is a season of reflection. I’d encourage the celebration because advent reminds us of the necessity to be ready for him in all seasons. Advent may also remind us that
the ultimate gift is Christ, he is indescribable;
we must be patient, as of old when they waited for the birth of Christ to fulfill the promises of God;
we have hope, as God has been faithful to fulfill his promises until now he will continue to be faithful;
we have been made for another world and long for the rule of our king.
Advent traditions vary, but most are familiar with the children’s calendar to ‘count down’ the days until Christmas. I have put together a countdown/calendar of readings (for adults and families) of some names of Jesus in the Bible. I hope you will find it helpful in focusing on Christ in the season of Christ-mas.
Advent is held for the four weeks before Christmas, starting on Sunday. So Advent officially starts on 28 November this year. Do you celebrate advent? What advent traditions do you carry on? Please share!
Technical notes: The download is available immediately on the next screen. I’ve put together a few document options, all full color. The first is 29 pages, the second (2 per page) prints on 15 pages and the last (four per page) on 8 pages. The images are smaller as more are on the page. For those who have a pocket calendar already at home, I’d recommend the last option, 4 per page.
